Referenced Scripture:
Romans 1:16-17, Romans 1:5, Romans 4:1-25, Mark 1:15

Reflection Questions:

Read Romans 4
1) Why would we say that gospel is “good news” and not just “good advice”? What is the difference between the two?

2) The gospel is a credited righteousness and not an earned righteousness. What is the difference between the two and why is it important to understand this?

3) Read verse 5. How can someone at be declared “righteous or justified” (POSITION) while at the same time be considered “ungodly or wicked” (CONDITION)?

4) What is the object of genuine saving faith? What are we placing our faith in? Why is genuine saving faith referred to as a “trust transfer”? Our faith is transferred from what to what?

5) What evidence would you see in a person’s thinking or behavior that would indicate that they don’t understand or have lost sight of the good news of the gospel?

6) If we are declared righteous by our faith, what is the motivation for righteous behavior and obedience for the believer?

Living Sacrificially

Journey Church February 2, 2025 1:45 pm

Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | January 19, 2025

Referenced Scripture:
Matthew 6:21, Matthew 23:23-24, 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, 1 Corinthians 16:1-2, 2 Corinthians 8:5-12, Psalm 34:8

Reflection Questions:
1) In what areas of your life is it really easy to invest your financial resources “cheerfully”? (retirement, vehicles, vacations, recreation, charity, etc…)? What does this reveal about the values of your heart/life?

2) Why do you think it is important to be intentional with your generosity? (having a plan and following through)

3) Why do you think people statistically give less as a percentage of their income as their income grows? (may need to speculate)

4) What challenges have you experienced along your generosity journey? What successes have you seen? How have you grown in generosity?

5) What would it look like for you to be sacrificial in your generosity? What could you say “no” to in order to grow your generosity?

6) Since we are called to “excel” in the grace of giving we are never done growing in generosity. What is your next step to grow and stretch in your generosity?

7) Does the thought of tithing (giving a tenth of your income) seem doable? Why or why not? What would it take to get there? What lifestyle adjustments would you need to make?

Transactional vs. Transformational

Journey Church January 19, 2025 1:52 pm

Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor

Referenced Scripture:
Matthew 25:14-30, Luke 12:48b, Luke 16:10-12, Matthew 6:21,24, Genesis 2:15, Colossians 3:23, Proverbs 21:20, Proverbs 22:7, Philippians 4:12

Reflection Questions:
Read Matthew 25:14-30
1. Imagine you are standing in front of Jesus giving an account for how you managed the resources He gave you in this life: What thoughts/emotions/questions come to mind? What do you think Jesus might affirm about your management? (be specific). What do you think Jesus might critique about your management? (be specific).

2. What do you think it means that God owns everything I have? In what ways can we live counter to that idea. ie. what I have is “my money”? How would we live if we believed that God is the owner of all I have? Share some specific examples.

3. In all of the areas of management (below) rate yourself 1-5. Why did you give each number? Explain.
1- need help!! TO 5-crushing it!!
- Diligent Earner
- Prudent Spender
- Generous Giver
- Wise Saver
- Cautious Debtor
- Simple Lifestyle

4. What advantages can you see to aligning your life to the values of God’s Kingdom with your resources? What costs are there to ignoring God’s financial values? How can our culture promote financial principles that run counter to the values of God and His Kingdom?

5. Who could you process the content in the FreedUp App to help each other grow in managing God’s resources? Take time to reach out to them now and ask.

Does God grade on a curve?

Journey Church January 12, 2025 1:30 pm

Jim Keena | Guest Speaker | January 5, 2024

Referenced Scripture:
Acts 17:16-34, 1 Peter 3:15b

Reflection Questions:
1) In his sermon, Jim shared the story of calling his mother after the birth of their first child. Reflect on a moment when you had the chance to share good news with someone special. What was the good news? Was it easy to tell them? How did that experience make you feel?

2) Generally, sharing good news with others is easy. But is it easy for you to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others? If it’s not, why does it feel challenging for you?

3) In Acts 17:16-34, Luke recounts the story of the Apostle Paul’s visit to Athens. When he saw the city, we were told, “he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols” (Acts 17:16b). Why do you believe he was so distressed by the rampant idolatry?

4) When you look at American culture, do you see us as a nation “full of idols”? Tim Keller’s definition of idolatry helps answer that question. He writes, “What is an idol? It is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give.” (Counterfeit Gods, xvii) According to his definition, which idols do we see in ourselves and others as worshiping?

5) In Athens, Paul preached the gospel to three distinct groups of people in three separate locations: the Jews in the synagogue (17:17a), philosophers in the marketplace (17:17b-18), and intellectuals at the Areopagus (17:18-31). How did he adjust his approach without compromising the message of the gospel?

6) Who do you know with little or no background in the Bible or the gospel? How would you explain the gospel to them differently than someone from a church background?

7) Bob Pierce, the founder of World Vision, prayed to God, “Break my heart with the things that break Your heart.” What troubles your heart about your friends and our community? What specific needs do you notice? What do you believe God is urging you to do in response?

8) In the sermon, the analogy of a traffic light was used to illustrate the three different responses that those who heard Paul preach the gospel had to his message. Acts 17:32-34 states, “When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, (red light) but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” (yellow light) 33 At that, Paul left the Council. 34 Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. (green light). Why is it important to recognize that responses to the preaching of the gospel can vary widely, from mockery to curiosity and, hopefully, belief? What color is your “stoplight”?

9) Is there someone you think you should share the good news with this new year?
